Learning Assistance Department

UIS desires to provide a successful school experience for all students. Learning Assistance staff members provide personal help for students who have special learning needs. Individual help and supplemental materials may be made available for students that need them, and LAD staff can conference with parents and teachers in an attempt to find the best ways to help individual students maximise their potential while preserving the child’s personal dignity. Occasionally, UIS may be able to arrange for diagnostic testing services by bringing in Educational Psychologists, or similar professionals, from outside of the country.

It is important to note that LAD services may be very limited, and are offered only when staff is available. If staff is not available, parents may be called upon to help meet these needs during the school day, and in some instances, UIS may be unable to meet your child’s needs.

The ESL/ELL programme falls under LAD. ESL is most active at the Primary School, but may be available at the Secondary Level as needed if teachers are available. ESL classes, tutoring, in-class assistance, and pull-outs help students to receive help with their English language learning.  ESL classes are part of the curriculum and are not optional for students who need them.  Once students are adequately proficient in English, they no longer need the extra help.
