About UIS

Vision Statement
UIS exists to develop Godly, life-long learners.

Mission Statement
The mission of UIS is to support the work of SIL by providing, in partnership with parents, a Christ-centred education that develops a Biblical worldview and prepares students to successfully function in all aspects of life.

A Brief School History
SIL began work in Papua New Guinea in 1956 and, in this same year, Aiyura International Primary School was established. In 1962, Ukarumpa High School was established as a supervised correspondence centre with five students and one teacher. The first students graduated in 1965. By 1970, grades 7 to 10 were fully staffed for all students, and grades 11 and 12 were available for American students.

In 1996, in order to to facilitate an articulated K-12 curriculum, the primary and secondary campuses were incorporated into one school under the name, “Ukarumpa International School.” In 2003, the Primary Campus was built on the SIL Centre and moved from its previous location near the SIL Aviation site. UIS operates as a department of SIL-PNG and is guided by a Board of Directors.

Ukarumpa International School is a Recognized School by the Papua New Guinea Department of Education and is a member of the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI). It has been continually accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) since 1978.

Currently, UIS serves a student body of approximately 225 students from preschool through grade 12.

“It is such a blessing to be able to attend UIS; there really is no other school like it. From the exceptional mountain view as you look out over the sports oval to the amount of time and energy the teachers put into each individual student, UIS is a truly wonderful place to learn. … All in all, UIS is amazing and I would choose no other school over it.”
